Titiana & TC Catholic community Diving and Fishing Project

Proposal Compiled by Rellysdom A’aron Malakana

Diocese of Gizo, Western Province

Date: 7 July 2008

Introduction

Titiana and New Mandra were the villages most affected, with the greatest loss of life in the April 2nd 2007 Quake & Tsunami in Gizo. Rehabilitation programs have  continued especially to bring back lives to normal. These activities are continued for certain periods only. This make life difficult and everybody is still living in tents. As usual Fishing & Diving are the main incomes for financial support and many live on swamp taro as the main diet.

Beginning the Month of May this year, Catholic communities from Outside Gizo Town ( Titiana & TC) received help from Dominican Sisters and the new Parish Priest from Gizo. This helps some families to Buy Sago palm leaves and others for a day sawing timbers. However this practice will cause “still asking for help”.

As for myself, I am engaged (Ready to Marry) a woman from that community and share same experience like them and have been looking for solutions for continuous support within ourselves, this is by proposing a proposal (see below). This proposal will be a solution for us to work together and support each other without too much demand from the Diocese. This idea motivated me to submit thiis proposal.

The cost of this project is approximately US$15,000 or Eur$11,000 and it will greatly assist with subsistence of the villages.

In our two communities we are total up to about 30 Families which I believed may benefit mostly the women and the children.

  1. Intended purposes or Outcome of the Project

  • Assist in rehabilitating the livelihood in our community this is by providing financial support for proper housing/accommodations and Sanitations

  • Once the Project established it will involve other community members (who had scatted around to provide them any means of supporting their families) to involve, this means, this will be an opportunity to organize ourselves for Church activities in community and parish as well.

  • Such project will organize us to depend on ourselves rather than Parish, Diocesan, Dominican or Caritas.

Conclusion

Photo’s been taken to support our proposal.See the end of this article.

It is now one and the quarter year and life is still difficult for us. The land now where we live belonging to our Province and we were told to stay and the resources we have is the Ocean to fish for our income and small huts beside the road side for selling betel nuts and tobacco. But for a start we need support from others who realized our situations. As I am now in-law to them and experienced the same situation, I am submitting this proposal. I will be in the Project contributing in coordinate so thinks will be in progressing well.
